Get to know Gibbs.

Gibbs was built by the community, for the community.

Gibbs Cancer Center has its roots deep in the Spartanburg community, from the time it was just a dream of two doctors to the world-class treatment and research center it has become today.

There have been many people and much passion involved at every stage.

Recognizing that cancer patients’ needs are very specific, Drs. Jay Bearden and Julian Josey began by convincing administrators at Spartanburg Regional Hospital to allow them to consolidate all existing cancer treatment and support services into a dedicated, single-floor unit, a coordinated-services approach that was virtually unheard of at the time.

Soon, other physicians who shared an interest in cancer treatment – and who had professional connections in the world of regional and national cancer treatment – added their ideas and expertise to create an in-house tumor board, where a diverse group of specialists met to discuss the best treatment approaches for each new cancer patient.

The idea of a specialized cancer treatment center for Spartanburg was born.

Local business leaders and philanthropists Jimmy and Marsha Gibbs brought the dream a step closer with a generous $1.2 million lead gift toward establishing a standalone center dedicated exclusively to the treatment of cancer. Located on the campus of Spartanburg Regional, the center’s mission was to provide leading edge research and treatment in a facility equipped with the most advanced diagnostic and treatment tools.

Throughout Spartanburg and the Upstate, the community swung into action, raising an additional $4 million to help build and equip the center and to establish the Cancer Foundation to provide ongoing support. Hospital employees themselves donated more than $1 million.

Named for philanthropists Jimmy and Marsha Gibbs, the Gibbs Cancer Center opened its doors in 1999.

Today, in addition to Gibbs Cancer Center on the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System campus, Gibbs offers satellite locations throughout the Upstate so that patients throughout the region have access to the best clinical expertise and most advanced treatments available anywhere, without having to wait or travel far from home.
